About Basuki Dasgupta
Basuki Dasgupta, born and brought up in Bishnupur, West Bengal, Basuki Dasgupta grew up admiring the corridors of 17th-century terracotta temples. When he was 19 years old, he went to Shantiniketan Visva Bharti to pursue his love and passion for art. Under the guidance of renowned and critical painter, Jogen Chowdhury, Basuki graduated in 1992.
Dasgupta's educational journey in art is as impressive as his creative one. He completed his postgraduate studies in Mural Painting in 1994 at Santiniketan, Kolkata, after graduating in Painting from Visva Bharati, Santiniketan, Kolkata in 1992. His career has been marked by numerous solo exhibitions, showcasing his profound artistic skills and vision. Notable among these are his shows at Kynkyny Art Gallery, Bangalore (2007, 2005), Kaleidoscope Art Gallery, Baroda (2007), Karnataka Chitrakala Parisath, Bangalore (2004), and Fluid Space Art Gallery, Bangalore (2003).
Basuki found his muse in Goddess Durga, whom he compares with the common Indian woman. Unlike the ten-armed, dusky Goddess of Puranas with flaming tongues, Basuki’s subjects toil in fields, tend their child, look after their families, wash clothes, buy groceries, and take baths in the afternoon, because they are busy. He believes that these common women are the true goddesses, who finish the tasks of ten arms, with a mere two arms.
