Born in 1984, Gurmeet Marwah earned his BFA in painting from College of Art, New Delhi in 2009 and MFA in printmaking from College of Art, New Delhi, in 2011. Before that he also pursued a course in commercial art from I.T.I PUSA, New Delhi in 2002.
Well known for his mixed media work involving charcoal, pencil, acrylics, gold leaf and watercolours, Gurmeet sketches animals as his subjects. Animals form an important part of Gurmeet’s artwork, and he uses them as a commentary on the society at large. In a way, the artist is commenting, that no matter which animal, human beings have a tendency of domesticating them. The dogs represent the pet form of wild wolves and the animals that could not be domesticated, such as the tigers, leopards etc. are still a part of our daily lives, either through their skins or as a part of our animal print clothes and upholstery.
His paintings are mostly monochromatic with a stunning combination of grey and golden yellow along with dramatic hints of bright red colour. He sketches his subjects with charcoal and painstakingly adds details to their feathers and furs. The background on the contrary focuses more on the eye-catching colour combination. Even though Gurmeet’s paintings are very animated, the little details such as the reflection in the subject’s eyes, the shadow beneath an object, etc. give these artworks a touch of reality.
Over the years, Gurmeet has displayed his works at many national and international galleries, including the prestigious Bombay Art Society, Ravindra Bhavan, Lalit Kala Academy, New Delhi, Ja-hangir Art Gallery, Mumbai and his alma mater College of Art, New Delhi. Gurmeet’s art is a part of many Indian and international art collections, including Lalit Suri Hospitality Group and College of Art, New Delhi.
