Manu Parekh, a celebrated Indian artist born in 1939 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, is a prominent figure in the contemporary art scene. His artistic journey, spanning over six decades, is marked by a vibrant use of color, a focus on human energy, and an enduring fascination with the holy city of Varanasi.
Parekh's artistic foundation was laid at the prestigious Sir Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy School of Art in Mumbai, where he graduated in 1962 . Early in his career, he explored the relationship between man and nature, a theme evident in his initial works. However, his artistic expression has since evolved, embracing contradictions and a wider range of subjects.
While Parekh's art has drawn inspiration from literary giants like Rabindranath Tagore and sculptor Ram Kinker Baij. His artistic process is described as being driven by a physical connection to the act of painting, rather than a purely intellectual one, though his works are undeniably informed by his wide-ranging interests in literature, history, and social commentary.
A significant turning point in Parekh's career came in 1975 when he moved to New Delhi. This period saw him transition from a salaried position to a life dedicated solely to his artistic practice. Following this shift, Parekh embarked on a series of powerful mixed-media works that addressed social issues.
Varanasi, a city steeped in history and spiritual significance, has become a recurring theme in Parekh's paintings. His depictions of the city capture the bustling life along the ghats, the intricate details of temple architecture, and the profound sense of human activity within this sacred space. Parekh's use of color in these works is particularly noteworthy, often employing bold hues and energetic brushstrokes to convey the city's vibrant spirit.
Parekh's artistic merit has been recognized through numerous prestigious awards. In 1982, he received the Lalit Kala Akademi Award, and in 1992, the Government of India bestowed upon him the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian honor. His works have been exhibited extensively in solo and group shows across India, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
